An interesting fact about lasers: The first type of laser was invented in 1960 and didn't really do all that much, until 1969 when a ruby laser was used to send a light beam to the Moon. It was reflected back by a reflector placed on the Moon's surface by the astronauts on the Apollo Space Program. It was this laser beam's travel time that provided an actual scientific measurement of the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
