An interesting fact about ball point pens:  The ball point pen was originally invented in 1888 but didn't take off as the ink clogged if it was too thick and leaked on several occasions.  The ball point pen was then re-designed in 1935 by one of the Biro brothers who was fed up of ink smudges and filling his fountain pen.  Whilst on a trip to the beach, the brother met an interesting old gentleman (who also happened to be the president of Argentina) who urged them to patent their design and set up a factory, of which they did some years later when WWII broke out.
